Leadership in Organizations
Reflection
When I took this class from Professor Mark Morales it was only his second teaching gig. His enthusiasm and fresh approach to teaching was very inspiring. Nearly every class at ULV has a group assignment and nearly every class encourages students to participate in class discussions. Usually the same students are eager to participate and the rest hide behind their laptops week after week. Not so in Mark's class. Every week we showed up not knowing what to expect other than we would be doing something new. One week each group had to put on a play based on the required reading. We had 15 minutes to prepare. The next week we might have to get up individually and teach the class for ten minutes. If someone was shy and tried to hide in the background that person would for sure be the first called upon the next week to lead a class on how to make enchiladas or something. Our group project was to interview a local leader or manager and then do a presentation on the management style of that manager and his company.. We interviewed the procurement manager from CEMEX. Everyone in our group wanted to go work for CEMEX after that interview. We concluded that CEMEX had a lot of authentic leadership in their organizations and that CEMEX's leadership philosophy was grounded on trustworthiness, good morals, and transparency. I would encourage anyone to take any Management related classes taught by Mark Morales, you will not be disappointed. However, you will have to wait a while as he is on a teaching sabbatical while earning his PhD.
Below are some links to a few samples of the work I did in his class. The Glass Ceiling is a fictional account describing some leadership theories. I chose to write a short story in lieu of an essay or a report. I just wanted to be creative. I think Professor Ogden would have been proud even though I had not taken her class yet. Also, my short paper of team leadership was so well received by Mark that he asked if he could use it at his job. Of course I said yes. That paper was based on an article I had read, by Rajeev Peshawaria, that describe the 6 "C's" of leadership. Also note that each sample I have provided was done in class under a strict time constraints and they contain occasional errors in grammar.
The most important thing I learned about leadership in this class is that leaders are doers. Leaders are not always the boss and they do not always have the right answer. A leader will do whatever it takes to get the job done or the mission accomplished. There are a whole lot of leadership styles, and each one is the right style if it is employed by the right leader in the right situation. A leader who is successful in one arena may not enjoy the same level of success in another. A good leader will do every thing that it takes to successfully lead, even if that means to get out of the way. In closing I would like to say that this class on Leadership was so much fun and so instructive because Mark Morales is a great leader himself.
