Reflection
I feel so fortunate and so blessed to have attended the University of La Verne. It is a wonderful school and I have learned much from all the instructors and materials. In high school no one ever spoke to me about attending college. My dad said that if I wanted to go I would have to pay for it myself. All that I ever heard was that it cost $25,000 or more to go to school. I had no idea where to get that kind of money and I was naive to student loans, grants, and scholarships. I wish I had been able to attend college at a younger age: I made so many mistakes in my career that I would never have made with the benefit of an education. Two things got me started in school. I used to play a lot of tennis at Pebble Beach Park in Victorville. I was 26 or 27 years old when one day a man, whom I later learned was coach Dudley, asked if i ever played tennis in college. I told him that I had never attended college. Dudley told me that I could play on his team at Victor Valley College if I went and signed up and took a full schedule, 4 classes. I asked him how much it would cost and he said units were only $11 each (I long for those days). I knew that I could swing that. I said when do I have to sign up by and he said today is the last day. So I rushed down and registered for four classes. After the tennis season, I didn't go to school anymore. I did not see how schooling would benefit me on the job and nothing that I had taken interested me. Which brings me to my second reason for going to school. At least ten years had passed and Stater Bros had hired a new President to run the company by the name of Jim Lee. Now Jim made it well known that he wanted his management team to obtain college educations. I was a low level line manager eager to advance my position in the company so I signed up for more classes at VVC. At that time units were $43 dollars each, ouch. I was working my way through classes and then I took my first business class, Principles of Accounting 101 with Professor Odell Moon. I got so excited by accounting! I started taking all the business classes I could and I enjoy learning anything I can about business.
Over the years I have gotten to enjoy learning and now it does not natter to me if I am learning about Art, History, or Science I get very interested in what I am learning. For better or worse, I have become a student for life. If you would have told me in high school that I would one day learn to love learning, not just the subjects I was good at, I would probably not have believed you. I also would not have believed you if you told me that I would be the first in my family to graduate from college but that is a reality now as well. I want to give back to others who may not realize that they too can go to school and get a degree. I hope that what I am doing inspires my children to achieve their dreams as well.
